Fun Facts About Norcross Georgia

Norcross, Georgia is a town of just under 10,000 people with a proud and interesting history. Considering Georgia was one of the original colonies it might be hard to believe there are many towns that size that are relatively new, but in fact Norcross wasn’t even officially designated a place until 1870, well after even the Civil War! While it’s now considered an outer suburb of Atlanta, this was never the original plan. The zip codes are:
30003, 30010, 30071,30093, 30091, 30092

In fact, Norcross was a long way from the original smaller Atlanta of the late 19th century, and was an area that was originally settled by Creek and Cherokee tribes of Native Americans. This region has a strong place in the history of Georgia as two major forts from the early 1800s were connected by the popular travel trails that ran through this region. This is how the area that would eventually become Norcross became a popular route for horses, then stage coaches, and eventually even railroads and highways.

Norcross was actually founded by J.J. Thrasher, an entrepreneur who saw how the growing railroad would change the region and open up incredible opportunities. He named it after Atlanta’s fourth mayor, who happened to be a good friend of his: Jonathan Norcross.

Norcross’s early reputation came as a favorite summer spot where the wealthy and influential of Atlanta could get away from the city during the most sweltering parts of summer. However, Norcross wouldn’t just sit as a summer get-away. This was a settlement that would make it’s own history, no matter how closely tied to Atlanta it would be throughout time.

A few fun facts about Norcross, Georgia:

– The first car produced south of the Mason-Dixon line was actually built in 1908 by Ed Buchanan and was appropriately called the NorX
– Norcorss is the second oldest settlement in Gwinnett County, coming in only behind only Lawrenceville
– A special cotton developed in Norcross became so famous farmers from around the country would send letters requesting seeds of this famous brand

These are just a few of the fun facts that show Norcross has its own attitude and history. While it may have long been in orbit of Atlanta and Atlanta’s elite, they haven’t just sat idle as a quiet suburb getaway!

While all the modern conveniences can be found throughout town, the downtown is mostly registered with the National Historic Society, as locals recognize the importance of their town’s history and preserving the old Southern look, style, and feel that the town square has embodied. Time may have passed and changes do occur, but when you have a history like that you need to make sure it’s preserved.

– The current population is just under 10,000 residents
– The town motto is “A Place to Imagine”
– The population is very multi-ethnic and multi-cultural with no one group accounting for more than 40% of the population
